ARTIST STATEMENT

Akeisha Walters, a south London based multi-disciplinary artist, whose work is a celebration of the modern-day black woman, her take on Afro-futuristic digital portraiture uses a variety of mediums. From collage and acrylic art to Lino printing and digital creativity. Her most recent collection entitled: 'I Represent', an exploration of black women who represented areas they live in around the various communities of London, and how significant these areas are to them. Akeisha uses playful hints in the form of exaggerated accessories such as bold statement earrings which signified the landmarks of that area the use of head-wraps symbolising modesty, beauty and power when black women wrap their crowns. She engages her audience to discuss not only the aesthetics of the portrait but also how significant those particular locations were to them. Akeisha’s Art draws inspiration from her experiences growing up in Brixton, having moved continuously throughout her life, Brixton had always remained ‘home’, a place that held such cultural and historical importance to shaping her womanhood now. She wanted to depict an artistic perspective of black women revealing that they were everywhere to be seen, to be celebrated.

Akeisha loves what she creates as she believes contemporary art can be a bridge for communication to those who remain inquisitive on her explorative depictions of black women whether it is the use of fine art or digital creations.
